Raphael painted the Sistine Madonna in 1512 for the church of San Sisto in Piacenza, as a political gift from Pope Julius II. The two small cherubs at the bottom — who became more famous than the Madonna herself — were added as compositional balance, reportedly based on street children Raphael saw watching the painting being carried through the city. The original hangs at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
