Modern work is the opposite of the old masters in one practical respect: it is built from flat colour with hard edges and no atmospheric depth, because painters of that period were deliberately abandoning the illusion of space. It does not need the wall to supply mood and belongs on white or light walls. Against charcoal it goes dull, because the wall absorbs the contrast it depends on.
