Saint George is the patron saint of England, Georgia, Ethiopia, and more than a dozen other nations — a Roman soldier martyred in 303 AD who became one of the most venerated figures in Christendom. The dragon-slaying legend emerged in the medieval period, codified in Jacobus de Voragine's Golden Legend of 1265. Raphael, Tintoretto, Paolo Uccello all painted it. This version gives it the diagonal force of a stained-glass window: white horse, levelled lance, a dragon alive with scales and fury — the patron saint of courage at the moment of impact.
