Jean-Étienne Liotard painted La Chocolatière (The Chocolate Girl) around 1744. The subject is a young serving girl — possibly Anna Baldauf, a Viennese innkeeper's daughter who married a Viennese count — carrying a glass of water and a cup of hot chocolate on a lacquer tray. Liotard worked in pastel, which was unusual for a large finished work at the time. The painting was bought by the Dresden royal collection in 1745 and has stayed there since.
