Grant Wood painted American Gothic in 1930, using his dentist and his sister as models for the farmer and his daughter. Wood entered it in a competition at the Art Institute of Chicago on a whim — and won a bronze medal. It was immediately controversial: some saw it as a critique of rural America, others as a celebration. Wood always refused to explain it. The painting never left the Art Institute of Chicago.
