Raphael painted the Sistine Madonna in 1512 for the church of San Sisto in Piacenza. The two cherubs at the bottom of the painting — resting their chins on their hands and gazing upward — were a minor detail in a large altarpiece. By the 20th century they had become the most widely reproduced detail in art history: appearing on postcards, mugs, wallpaper, and posters more than any other image. The full painting is at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
