Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi ("Saviour of the World") was painted around 1500. It shows Christ in Renaissance dress, one hand raised in blessing, the other holding a crystal orb. The painting was lost for centuries, misattributed to lesser artists, and sold at auction in 1958 for £45. In 2017, authenticated as a Leonardo, it sold at Christie's New York for $450.3 million — the highest price ever paid for a painting at auction. Its current location is unknown; it was scheduled to go on display in Abu Dhabi but the exhibition has not taken place.
