Jacques-Louis David painted The Intervention of the Sabine Women in 1799, while imprisoned after the fall of Robespierre. The painting shows the legendary moment when the abducted Sabine women throw themselves between their Roman husbands and their Sabine fathers and brothers to stop the battle. David intended it as a plea for post-Revolutionary reconciliation in France. It took him four years to complete. The painting is at the Louvre in Paris.
