Hieronymus Bosch painted The Last Judgment triptych around 1500. The outer panels show the world before the Fall; the inner panels show Paradise, the Last Judgment, and Hell in extraordinary detail. Bosch filled the hellscapes with hybrid creatures, tortures, and dark humour — imagery that remained unique in European art for a century. The triptych is at the Akademie der Bildenden Kunste in Vienna, where it has been since the 18th century.
