How to Create a Gallery Wall: The 5-Step Process That Works

Van Gogh Starry Night triptych gallery wall installation on Canadian maple — DeckArts Berlin

Creating a gallery wall at home takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on the number of pieces and wall material. The single most effective technique is planning the arrangement on paper before touching the wall. For DeckArts Canadian maple decks, the consistent 85 × 20 cm format per deck makes the mathematics predictable: 3 decks at 8 cm spacing = 76 cm total width; 5 decks at 8 cm spacing = 132 cm. Every deck is identical in dimension, which means the spacing is reproducible. Ships from Berlin from $140 per deck with complete mounting hardware.

Step 1 — Plan the Arrangement on Paper

For a 3-deck horizontal triptych: total width = 3 × 20 + 2 × 8 = 76 cm. Mark the centre at your chosen wall position. The left anchor is at centre minus 28 cm; the centre anchor is at centre; the right anchor is at centre plus 28 cm. For a 5-deck gallery: total width = 5 × 20 + 4 × 8 = 132 cm. Write all anchor positions on paper before touching the wall. This eliminates the most expensive gallery wall mistake: drilling in the wrong position.

Step 2 — Mark the Reference Line

Use a spirit level and pencil to draw a horizontal line across the wall at the chosen centre height. Correct heights by room: standing rooms (living room, hallway) 160–165 cm; bedroom above bed head 145–155 cm; home office 130–145 cm; above furniture 15–20 cm above the furniture top. Mark every anchor position along this line. Do not drill yet.

Step 3 — Test with Paper Templates

Cut paper to 85 × 20 cm. Hold each template against the wall at the marked positions using low-tack masking tape. Step back to viewing distance. Assess height and spacing. Adjust pencil marks if needed. Moving pencil marks is free; filling drilled holes is not.

Step 4 — Install the Wall Anchors

Drill pilot holes at each marked position using the appropriate bit for your wall: 6 mm for plasterboard hollow wall anchor or directly into stud; 6 mm masonry bit into mortar joint (not brick face) for brick; hammer drill for concrete; tile bit through masking tape for tile. Insert plugs from the DeckArts mounting kit. Drive screws to depth. Check horizontal alignment before fully tightening.

Step 5 — Hang and Level All Decks

Hang the centre deck first. Check level with spirit level along the deck top edge. Hang flanking decks outward from centre. Use a spirit level across the tops of all decks to confirm even height. Adjust any deck that is out of level. For a triptych composition, all three decks must be within 1–2 mm of each other.

FAQ

How do you create a gallery wall?

Creating a gallery wall with DeckArts Canadian maple decks requires five steps: calculate total dimensions (3 decks at 8 cm = 76 cm, 5 decks = 132 cm), mark a horizontal reference line at correct height (160–165 cm for living rooms), test with paper templates before drilling, install wall anchors from the DeckArts mounting kit, hang from centre outward and level across the full installation. Complete mounting hardware included. Ships from Berlin from $140 per deck.

How far apart should gallery wall pieces be?

8 cm between DeckArts decks is the standard spacing — consistent across every arrangement, creating visual coherence without the pieces merging. 5 cm for tighter triptych compositions; 10 cm for mixed-work galleries where each deck is a different artist. The DeckArts mounting kit includes hardware for all configurations.
