Klimt’s Tree of Life is the central panel of the Stoclet Frieze — the monumental mosaic programme for the music room of the Stoclet Mansion (Brussels, 1905–1911). The mansion is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. External references: Belvedere Vienna; MAK Vienna — Stoclet Frieze Drawings. DeckArts from ~$140.
The Stoclet Frieze: Gesamtkunstwerk
The Palais Stoclet in Brussels was designed by Josef Hoffmann (Wiener Werkstätte) as a total Gesamtkunstwerk: every element designed as a unified programme. Klimt designed three music room panels: Expectation + Tree of Life + Fulfilment. The Fulfilment panel is the direct source for The Kiss (1908–1909, Belvedere Vienna). Original drawings at MAK Vienna. See: Klimt: The Gold Phase Biography.
Iconography: Axis Mundi, Gold Spirals, Byzantine Ground
The Tree of Life: single gold tree with spiralling branches against a flat gold ground. The axis mundi: the world axis connecting earth and sky. Spiral motifs: eternity and organic growth. Birds in branches: soul and transformation. Flat gold ground: adopted from Ravenna Byzantine mosaics (Klimt’s 1903 visit) — not naturalistic space but a sacred timeless ground.
The 23.75-karat gold: Real gold leaf applied and burnished, then engraved for textural variation. Under 2700K warm LED: warm amber luminosity. Under cool LED (4000K+): flat metallic. 2700K mandatory. See: LED Lighting: Why 2700K Is Mandatory.
